Back in 1983, when the Joe Hand Boxing Gym was nothing more than an idea scratched down on paper, we wondered if it was really possible to reach out and change someone's life in a positive way.  Nineteen years later, the prestigious selection to receive the 2002 Philadelphia Sports Congress Community Service Award confirms our aspirations.

Initially our goal was to build the finest boxing gym and community program in the city.  A devoted staff worked closely with the kids, instructing them in with these kids, instructing them in the sport of boxing, and getting to know them as individuals.

"After developing the best amateur boxing program in the United States, we began to do even more."

-Joe Hand, Sr.

We saw the gym as a stepping stone, an idea to create a place for kids to learn about competition and accomplish something within themselves.  And it worked.  The Joe Hand Boxing Gym was a fast success, turning a desolate area of the city into a vibrant hub of activity.  Then we discovered these kids needed something more than just a place to train.  They needed encouragement with their school studies and access to technologies that weren't being afforded them.

So we solicited the help of some of our union and corporate friends, cleared space at the gym, and built a computer lab.  And now the kids don't just come to box, they also come to study.

A world of opportunity is right here, as these kids are mentored by educators and athletes, guiding them down what can be a difficult path.  We turned a building that was nothing more than a burned shell, into a facility that boasts regulation boxing arenas, brand new equipment, and a modern computer center where children from the community can participate in the education process, whether or not they're interested in learning how to box.

Everyday at Joe Hand Boxing Gym you'll find kids here who are "golden" and "silver" gloves champs, an Olympic hopeful or two, and lots of boys and girls who simply come in just to sit in front of a computer for the first time in their lives.

"Seeing kids come to the boxing gym with their gym bag on one shoulder and their schoolbag on the other is such a rewarding feeling."

-Joe Hand, Sr.

Of course, nothing would have come of that old lot at the corner of Howard and Thompson streets if it wasn't for the dedication and determination of many individuals and corporations to which we owe our gratitude.  As well, we extend a special thanks to IBEW Local 98.

As evidenced by this award, our continued goal to make a difference in these kids' lives is not forgotten.  When you support Joe Hand Boxing Gym, good things happen.

We're proud of our 2002 Philadelphia Sports Congress Community Service Award

Each year an individual or organization is presented with this award for contributing to the quality of life in Philadelphia through sports.  We now know how doing good things can put you in some pretty good company -- the Police Athletic League, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Philadelphia Phillies all have been bestowed this award in previous years.  We thank everyone who made this possible.
